WHAT IS DRAG ?

Men have been dressing as women on stage for hundreds of years, dating back to the thirteenth century. It is believed that drag is related to the church and related to William Shakespeare who had men dress as women because at the time, women were not allowed to perform on stage.

DRAG = Dress Resembling A Girl.

There are many kinds of drag artists and they vary greatly from professionals who have starred in movies to people who just try it once. Drag queens also vary by class and culture and can vary even within the same city. Although many assume all drag queens are gay men or transgender, there are drag artists of all genders and sexualities who do drag for various reasons. Generally, drag queens dress in a female gender role, often exaggerating certain characteristics for comic, dramatic or satirical effect. Other drag performers include "faux queens”, who are women who dress in an exaggerated style to emulate drag queens.

AMAZING FROCKS!

I'm ashamed to admit that I have only recently seen
The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
I was in heaven watching every minute of it! Not only it is an amazing film but features some of the most outrageous costumes and funniest lip syncs I've ever seen.

I am now in forever search for an ostrich headpiece, just like this...

CAN A WOMAN BE A DRAG QUEEN ?

Can a woman be a drag queen? YES! Look at Wendy Williams, she has practically made an entire career out of being one! In fact, there are woman who are professional drag queens and often refer to themselves as Faux Queens.

A faux queen or bio queen is a female who adopts the style typical of male drag queens. A faux queen may be described as "a drag queen trapped in a woman's body." Like traditional drag queens and drag kings, faux queens play with gender roles and gender norms to educate and entertain. Faux Femme forbearers can be found in the larger-than-life personas developed by Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles, Mae West and her hyper-sexual and bawdy quick wit, Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria; not to mention Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters, who got her start doing drag in 1996 at legendary drag performance venue Trannyshack in San Francisco.

So ladies...have no fear of being upstaged by your gay bestie. Go out, get a wig, and strut your stuff!

QUEEN OF ALL QUEENS

PARIS IS BURNING

Paris is Burning is a 1990 documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston. Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980's, it chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African American, Latino, gay and transgender communities involved in it.

The film takes a look at the language among these queens and how it is integrated into the ball...
